This Régence mantelpiece in grey sandstone tics all the boxes of the age of the Baroque. The Régence used the same strong classically inspired lines from the early Baroque but brought in fluent lines, asymmetry and specific symbols. As court was more and more preoccupied by celebrating life the mood was changing and architecturally the nobility wanted a lighter, more playful look.
So we still see quite a few straight lines but a gentle curve has been brought in. Also the central shell cartouche still represents the sun but the shell itself has a asymmetric design. Finally the moldings on the legs are typical Baroque but they smoothly follow the curves of the sculptor.
