This Roman table made in the Baroque taste is a fine example of the type of furniture made for stylish and demanding customers in the eternal city. Made in the late 17th century to early 18th century of carved and gilded wood the gilded surface and carving are all original. The carving and profile of the table are bold and dramatic while still having fine small details in the carving giving the table a play or light and a sense of moment across the surface. The carving is composed of a center shell flanked on either side with large inverted architectural volutes. Across the punch work surface, small flower heads and stylized acanthus leaves play while the knees are carved with grotesque heads issuing from further acanthus leaves. The legs terminate in large and robust scrolling supports on a small padded foot. The table is topped with a very nicely figured thick sienna marble top having a deep rich color and dramatic veining. The table is constructed with large hand-cut nails and shows all the signs associated with hand-planed tooling of interior wood surfaces. Gessoed and surface prepared with yellow clay for a light gold colored result. The interior woods are deeply oxidized and the table has a number or old shipping labels from the beginning of the twentieth century.
