Early Vintage Penguin Whirligig from Plymouth, Massachusetts, circa 1930s – 1940s, a hand cut and painted wooden flat silhouette of a large penguin in worn original paint. The paddles are original as well, and made of un-vulcanized rubber. A unique and very whimsical piece of folk art. Mounted on a chamfered wooden block.
The whirligig remains in very good condition, but clearly shows its use. There is a small amount of wood erosion and loss at the bottom. The chin shows chafing from the wind-driven paddles, especially on the right side. Likewise there is similar chafing on the lower body, again especially on the right side. The effect is actually very pleasant and I think enhances the folk art appeal.
