Blue and white bowl Delft, 1690-1710
The bowl is painted on the outside with a continuous garland of flowers under a scroll border. The inside is boldly painted with a flying bird under clouds, above a simplified ground. This schematic decoration of the interior shows a strong resemblance with majolica chargers from the same period.
Dimensions: diameter 25 cm / 9.84 in., height 11.2 cm / 4.41 in.
Delftware potteries manufactured different types of bowls for daily use and for decoration. The ones meant for daily use were either plain white or painted with simplified motifs. Large bowls like this one were often displayed in the home, especially on top of cupboards.
