An exceptional example of an early and rare caquetoire chair with carved cresting over an unusually narrow back, inscribed ‘I.M.I., I.H.S., ANNO 1718, G.B.’, with large outward scrolling arms, on block turned supports, joined by peripheral stretchers.
The piece has an absolutly wonderful patina and would grace any home. Caquetoire is a French term meaning gossip or chat. These chairs were originally made for women which is why the seat is a large trapezoidal shape, this would accommodate the wide dresses worn by women of this period.
