American Federal period chippendale birch and pine tall chest of five graduated drawers with bracket base. Each drawer has a molded edge and the secondary wood is basswood, which is a very clean light colored hardwood. This chest is beautifully constructed with not only dovetailed sides into the top of the chest, but also dovetailed bracket feet. The bold molding on the top finishes the chest and adds the perfect balance. This chest was probably originally finished with a red wash, but at some point in time it was finished as you see it showing the fine grain of the woods. On the wide backboards are two dates painted in red wash, which we assume to be the date of construction (1804) and further dates when the chest was either restored or moved. At only 36 inches wide in the body of the chest (39″ across the cornice) this tall chest provides considerable storage and style without a large footprint. The drawers work smoothly.
