In it legend, Henry IV courted the daughter of the gardener of the castle of Nerac when Charles IX came. But Henri IV left Fleurette at the behest of his tax collector. Fleurette, overcome with sadness, threw herself into the river and drowned.
This set of engravings tells this story. Here in the fourth plate, Fleurette’s body lies lifeless beside the fountain. A letter is on the ground, Henri IV and other men are coming to the body of this lifeless woman.
