18thC and possibly earlier. Very large and incredibly heavy Sri Lankan Kandy style (with echoes of much earlier styles). 9 3/4 inches tall (with no finial or base these would be 15+ inches), 11 1/2 inches on custom stand, almost 10 inches wide at knees. Due to the requirement that Lankan Buddhas (for nearly the past 1,000 years) must be solid cast, this is close to as large as the sitting ones get during this period. The face, ears, and elements of the body shape are related to Lankan Buddhas 500 to 800 years earlier. These give this piece a very distinctive look for a Kandyan Buddha. For example, most Kandy Buddhas have the ears sticking out (as the earlier types, as the ears flatter and push back. The bodies of most Kandy Buddhas are fairly linear, with reasonably thin arms that give them (as most Buddhas) a relatively androgynous look. This one, as the early ones, has broad, thick shoulders, and strong, thick upper arms that make him look distinctly masculine. If significantly earlier than 18thC, the value goes up dramatically. INCREDIBLY heavy, and more massive than the dimensions of photos convey- I, at 66 years old cannot lift it by myself. ( 37.83lbs / 17.160kg – Buddha ) Base: 3.58lbs / 1.625kg
