This ancient stone guardian lion shizi was carved by hand out of a single block of limestone. The artisan beckoned the guardian out from the stone, manipulating the unyielding material with masterful precision. Intricately carved with a gleeful expression, this mythical fu lion dog was likely a decorative yet meaningful architectural component, perhaps commissioned by a wealthy landowner to adorn his Qing-dynasty home as a protector. Gently textured with the fantastic character of time, areas of the stone show the oxidation and smoothness that come with centuries of touch.
