17th – 18th century French andirons – fire dogs made of wrought iron. These French andirons are called ‘landiers’ in France. This dates from the times the andirons were the main cooking equipment in the house. They had spit hooks to grill meat or poultry and sometimes a cup to keep drinks warm.
